How long does CBD oil last — shelf life, storage and expiry in Gold Coast

4 June 2026

How long does CBD oil last in Gold Coast? Shelf life is 12–24 months from manufacture. Storage, COA batch dates and signs of degradation — no health claims.

Yes, CBD oil does expire — and yes, how long it lasts depends almost entirely on how you store it. A sealed, dark-glass bottle in a cool cupboard will stay within its stated specification for 12 to 24 months from manufacture. The same oil left open on the kitchen bench in the Gold Coast sun could go off in a fraction of that time. Here is the full picture, from the chemistry of degradation to reading the date on your own bottle.

Does CBD oil expire? Yes — 12 to 24 months from manufacture, with storage as the controlling factor.

What gives CBD oil a shelf life?

CBD oil is a plant extract — cannabinoids and terpenes drawn from hemp — dissolved in a carrier. That combination gives it measurable shelf life, because both components react to their environment.

The hemp extract is sensitive to the three classic degradation triggers: light, heat and oxygen. Ultraviolet light breaks down cannabinoid molecules; heat accelerates the process; air entering the bottle each time it is opened adds oxygen, driving oxidation. The result, over time, is that the cannabinoid content drifts below what the label states, and the terpene profile — responsible for the oil's botanical smell — shifts from fresh to flat or musty.

The MCT carrier — medium-chain triglycerides from coconut, which is what our oils use — is among the more stable carrier options for hemp extract. Unlike hemp seed oil, MCT has a longer oxidative shelf life. But it is still a fat, and oxidised fat smells rancid. When the carrier goes off, you will notice the smell before you notice anything else.

Both components point toward the same set of storage rules: dark, cool, capped.

How long does our CBD oil last?

The oils from our Gold Coast range ship in 50ml amber glass dropper bottles. Amber glass was chosen specifically to screen ultraviolet light; the dark colour makes the bottles less photogenic than clear glass, but it extends the functional life of the contents by blocking a significant portion of the light spectrum that drives degradation.

With the bottle sealed and stored correctly, our extract — imported from EU Labs in Amsterdam — is formulated to remain within specification for 12 to 24 months from the manufacture date. That date appears on the Certificate of Analysis for each batch. The COA is the independent lab test run on that lot number before dispatch; it records the cannabinoid profile, the THC reading and the manufacture date in one place.

To get the COA for your bottle, email [email protected] with the batch number from the base of the bottle. We send the matching certificate for that specific lot.

How to store CBD oil correctly

Storage is the variable you control, and it is the one that matters most.

Cool is better than cold. Room temperature — consistent, not swinging between warm and cold — is the practical target. A pantry shelf, a bedroom drawer, a bathroom cabinet away from the shower steam: all are reasonable. A bench near the stove, or a windowsill in Gold Coast's Queensland light, is not.

Dark beats any colour of glass. The amber bottle already does most of the UV work. Adding direct sunlight is unnecessary and counterproductive. Even standard indoor lighting adds some UV over months of exposure.

Always cap it after use. The volume of air introduced each time the dropper is drawn and returned is small, but across dozens of uses over months it adds up. Capping tightly after every serving is the simplest oxidation control available.

Upright, not on its side. Keeping the bottle upright maintains the dropper in the right orientation and avoids prolonged contact between the oil and the rubber seal at the top of the dropper.

Skip the freezer. MCT can temporarily solidify or go cloudy below around 10°C. It re-liquefies when warmed back to room temperature, so it is not ruined — but the temperature cycling is unnecessary, and a cold, thick oil is difficult to dispense accurately.

Store your hemp-derived CBD oil in a cool, dark place — away from Gold Coast's direct sun.

Signs the oil has gone off

Within the 12–24 month window and correct storage, degradation should not be visible. But it is worth knowing what to look for if you have found an old bottle:

Smell change. This is the most obvious sign. Fresh hemp extract in MCT smells earthy and botanical. An off oil develops a rancid sharpness — the oxidised carrier — or a flat, musty note as the terpenes break down. If the smell is significantly different from when you first opened the bottle, that is meaningful information.

Colour deepening. A pale gold is normal for our full-spectrum oil. Dark brown is not. The same goes for visible particulates settling at the bottom that were not there before.

Persistent cloudiness at room temperature. Brief cloudiness after cold storage is MCT temporarily thickening — it clears within minutes at room temperature. If the cloudiness stays at room temperature, especially alongside changed smell, the oil has moved outside its original specification.

These are compositional observations — about what is in the bottle — and none of them carry a health implication. A degraded oil is simply outside its stated specification, which is reason enough to replace it.

Reading the expiry on the Certificate of Analysis

The COA is a one-page summary of the batch: manufacture date, test date, cannabinoid concentrations, and the THC figure (under 0.3% for full-spectrum; zero for broad-spectrum). Reading those numbers tells you exactly how old the oil is and where its composition sits at the time of testing.

The batch number is printed on the label — usually on the underside of the bottle or near the base. Match that number to the COA and you have the full picture for that specific lot. We cover how to read the label and what to look for on the COA in our guide to using CBD oil, which is a useful first stop if you are new to hemp-extract products. The full-spectrum CBD oil page lists the spectrum and strength details alongside the COA request process.

If you want the COA for your current bottle, email [email protected] with your lot number and we will send it through. The guide explains the numbers once it arrives.

Every bottle dispatched to Surfers Paradise, Southport, Burleigh Heads, Robina and across QLD is batch-tested before it leaves our supplier, so you can always request the document that matches your order.

Common questions about CBD oil expiry

Does CBD oil expire? Yes — hemp extract and the MCT carrier both degrade with light, heat, time and air exposure. Typical shelf life from manufacture is 12 to 24 months under correct storage conditions. The exact manufacture date for any batch is on its Certificate of Analysis, available on request from [email protected].

How do I know if my CBD oil has gone off? Smell it first: rancid or flat/musty instead of earthy and botanical. Then check the colour: significant darkening toward brown or persistent cloudiness at room temperature (not just post-cold clearing) are the physical signs the oil is outside its original spec. Within its shelf life and stored correctly, neither should appear.

What is the best storage method for CBD oil? Cool, dark and capped. A pantry or bedroom cupboard away from heat sources is ideal. Not a windowsill, not near the stove, not in the freezer. Consistent room temperature with the cap tight after every use.

Where can I buy fresh-batch CBD oil in Gold Coast? Online from CBD Oil Gold Coast, with delivery across Surfers Paradise, Southport, Burleigh Heads, Robina and through QLD. Every batch ships with a Certificate of Analysis available on request, so you can confirm the manufacture date and cannabinoid content for the specific bottle you receive. The full range starts from $89.95.

Does the expiry window differ between full-spectrum and broad-spectrum? Both share the 12–24 month guideline under correct storage. Full-spectrum retains a legal trace of THC under 0.3%; broad-spectrum removes it entirely. That THC threshold is set by the Therapeutic Goods Administration and confirmed for each batch on the Certificate of Analysis. Storage conditions are the dominant variable for shelf life in both cases.
